Set Your Programmable Thermostat Like a Pro & See the Savings Pile Up
The warmer months are definitely the most costly when it comes to energy expenses in Omaha. But there are a few ways you can keep more money in your wallet this spring and summer. One of the most cost effective ways is setting and utilizing your programmable thermostat. Omaha’s go-to heating and cooling company, Getzschman Heating and Cooling, explains how to use the thermostat in your home to see savings.
Ready, Set, Save!
According to the Energy Information Administration, heating and cooling makes up nearly 42% of home energy costs. But you can cut that percentage down by using your programmable thermostat to your advantage. You could save as much as $180 a year in energy costs. To rack up the savings, follow this guideline on how to set your programmable thermostat:
- Keep the temperature set at the thermostat’s energy savings set-points for at least eight hours a day. A good time to do this is during the day when you are not home, or at night when you are asleep. These set-points should be 7-10 degrees warmer in the summer and cooler in the winter.
- Only use the “Hold/Permanent/Vacation” setting when you will be out of the house for an extended period of time, like a long weekend or vacation. Don’t use this as an everyday setting.
- Do not try to amp up the air conditioning or heat by setting the thermostat to an extreme temperature. It will not cool or heat your home any faster, and will end up costing you more money, as your HVAC system will be working harder.
- Use more than one thermostat around your home if it has multiple heating and cooling zones.
- Be sure to change the batteries each year on your thermostat.
If you’ve followed all these steps and still aren’t seeing any savings, you could have a problem with your air conditioner.
